Vacation Proof Your Weight Loss Plan

Vacations can be packed with family time and new experiences but too often they're also packed with calories. Don't let your summer getaway ruin your weight loss plan. Stay healthy with our vacation getaway tips:

1) Stay active. This one isn't hard to do when you choose an active vacation such as hiking, white water rafting, or hitting the rides at Disney World. (Do you know what EPCOT stands for? Every Person Comes Out Tired!) But it's a lot harder to stay active when your idea of vacation is to lie in a hammock on the beach. If yours is a more leisurely vacation, plan some exercise into every day with a long walk on the beach, a hike to that great restaurant or some sunrise yoga.

2) Drink up! We're not talking alcoholic beverages, since they add a ton of empty calories, but instead make sure you get plenty of good old fashioned water. You can make it summery by adding a lime twist or a lemon slice or pack it with satisfying protein with our PWM drinks. You can also do what the cool kids do and wear a hydration pack while strolling through your tourist sites. Some of them are insulated to keep you refreshed with several liters of cool, cool water.

3) Skip the free breakfast. Sure, it's vacation and the hotel breakfast buffet doesn't cost a penny, but you'll pay for those biscuits and gravy when you get home and step on the scales. Instead, pack some PWM breakfast bars or shakes and enjoy a breakfast in bed. Or make it an early morning picnic on your balcony or the beach.

4) Buddy up on the treats. What's a vacation without sampling the local ice cream? Cut the calories by doubling the spoons and sharing with your vacation mate. Or, if you're vacationing alone (and good for you for treating yourself to a getaway!), leave half in your bowl. Just because it's there doesn't mean you have to eat it all.

5) If you're eating out, speak up. Vacation normally means trying lots of local restaurants and they may not have nutrition labels on their menus, so ask your waitstaff for their recommendations for healthier choices. And if the tempting dish comes with a calorie-drenched sauce, ask for it to be left off or served on the side. Remember, your waitstaff is working for tips so they'll be happy to accommodate your request if they can.

6) Eating in a hurry? Stay on your diet with our fast food guide.

7) Set a reminder to lose. It's easy to get caught up in the "What Happens on Vacation Stays on Vacation" way of thinking but we all know those extra calories will follow us home. So set a daily reminder on your phone to stay focused on the reasons you're losing weight. Maybe it's for better health? Or maybe it's to fit into your old wardrobe? If your goal was to look better on the beach and you're already on that beach, then it's probably time to find a new incentive and start daydreaming about the next vacation!
