10 Tips to Fight Fatigue
Have you been watching the Olympics? If you’re exhausted just thinking about all that running and jumping and swimming, you’re not alone. The summer sun has sapped our energy, last minute vacations have run us ragged, and now we’re running our own sprint to get the kids ready for school. Who has any energy left?
Rejuvenate with our 10 Tips to Fight Fatigue:
1) Get plenty of water. The heat of summer increases your hydration needs so it’s smart to add a bottle or two to your daily water intake. Often the first feelings of fatigue are actually caused by dehydration and you may find a tall, cool drink perks you up. Unless, of course, that drink is alcoholic. Limit your alcohol intake and add an equal amount of water for every drink you take to counter the alcohol’s drying effects.
2) Stand up. Did you know the simple motion of standing signals the muscles in your legs to contract and push blood to your head? That’s why we sometimes get light-headed when we stand if the muscles aren’t doing their job properly. More blood to the brain is a good thing, so get up off that sofa and nourish your brain. (Bonus tip: Set your smart watch to remind you to stand at least once per hour)
3) As long as you’re up, get moving. The old maxim “Use It or Lose It” must have been written about your energy level. It seems counter intuitive to fight fatigue with exercise but that’s exactly what works best. Your body is happiest when it gets to move and a 20 minute walk will leave you feeling refreshed and energized.
4) Consume more protein. Your blood sugar spikes when you eat carbs but protein intake counters those spikes for a more sustained energy boost. Our PWM snacks provide protein in a delicious variety of shakes, bars and chips.
5) Don’t skip meals. Sometimes our schedules are so busy that we forget to eat, but you’ll probably feel that missed meal in a blood sugar crash. It’s important to feed your body even if you have to toss a few prepackaged meals in your purse or your car to make it happen. A meal doesn’t have to be a five course feast and there’s always time for one of PWM’s grab-and-go high protein snack.
6) Get your minerals. Low levels of magnesium can have immediate impact on your energy level. You can easily boost magnesium, which your body uses to convert glucose into energy, by eating a small handful of almonds or peanuts, Or, better yet, skip the calories and stock up on a supplement such as PWM Ultra-Me Tabs. (See more below in our Big Bonus Tip)
7) Enjoy the sunshine. There’s plenty of it with summer’s long daylight hours so even an evening walk will let you soak up the sun’s rays. Sunshine boosts your levels of Vitamin D, plus it’s great for your mood.
8) Take a Power Nap. We can’t recommend a three hour nap, which will disrupt your normal sleeping habits, but closing your eyes for 10 minutes can leave you refreshed, clearheaded, and energized. Set the timer on your smartphone, close your eyes, and take a short break from the world. Make sure to get enough sleep at night, too, which can be difficult with the sun peeking through the curtains at summer’s earlier sunrises. You may consider adding darkening shades to your windows.
9) Get a check-up. Sometimes low energy levels can be a symptom of an underlying health issue, so if you’ve tried eating right and getting your nightly walk and you’re still dragging through your day, it may be time for your annual physical. If it has more than a year since you last had your blood work done, schedule that appointment today.
10) Have fun. Isn’t that what summer is supposed to be about? Go play in a pool. Enjoy a gossip session under a shady tree. Laugh a lot. If you want to feel like a kid again, try playing like a kid. Studies show that simply laughing, even if you have to pretend to be happy, will make you actually feel happier. Fake it until you make it, as the kids say. So sing. Dance. Go have fun!
