How To Survive A Pessimistic Walking Companion

As we always say at Professional Weight Management, it’s easier losing with a friend. But is that true when you’re trying to log your daily steps and your friend is making you regret every mile? Sure you love them, but that doesn't mean your loved ones are always easy to walk with. Sometimes they're grumpy and (God bless their pessimistic little hearts) sometimes they're just stuffed full of discouraging words. So full the words come pouring out all over your determination. We know they don't mean to undermine your will to become healthy but that's exactly what can happen unless you're armed with the right tools to fend off their negative vibes. Here's how:

1) Sharpen Your Focus: It helps to put your goals in writing, then share those goals with your loved ones. Make sure the plan follows the SMART format and is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. Being able to point to a proven plan gives you a strong defense against doubters.

2) Deflect: Most of us have started a zillion exercise plans that didn't last. So is it any wonder your friends are quick to say your daily walking plan will fail too? If you know they'll naysay, change the subject. Want some subjects to deflect to? Go see one of the summer blockbusters or read a good book or take in the Art Walk. Not only will you have conversational material but your daily walk with your loved one will be more entertaining.

3) Encourage: The unspoken emotion behind most negative talk is fear. If you can succeed, then your friends have no excuses for their failure and have to face the frightening reality of their personal responsibility. But the good news is healthy habits are contagious and they can catch them from you. But don't push. Remember what Tammi always says: Your life will change "when you're ready." Setting a good example may help your negative friends become ready.

4) Keep A Cheat Sheet: Keep a list of your successes in your pocket so you'll have an instant pick-me-up when someone drags you down. Did you reach past the ice cream for a sprinkling of raisins? Write that down. Did you acheive your weight loss goals three weeks in a row? Write that down. Did you trade your morning coffee for a healthful bottle of water? Write that down. And good for you! Now don't ever forget how awesome you truly are!
